More on Elmore.
From a comment:
Yes, the abbot has been dispensed of his vows and is now, according to the Record, doing voluntary work as an assistant priest at the Church of the Advent of Christ the King, San Francisco. In fact, he is listed on the website as an associate priest.
In his letter to the community, quoted in the Record, he writes:
No, the abbey has not been downgraded officially.
Do you mean the former abbot has been dispensed of his vows and gone into secular life? Is he still an active priest? Has Elmore been downgraded from an abbey to a priory because there are too few monks?

In his letter to the community, quoted in the Record, he writes:
the last ten years or so .... have been years of disappointment in that the community has not seen the hoped-for growth; indeed, we have steadily reduced in numbers and monastic life generally has, in my view, deteriorated as a result. They have not been happy years; indeed, I regard the past few years as the unhappiest of my life.
No, the abbey has not been downgraded officially.

That the former Abbot is at Advent, San Francisco is not a good sign.
Isn't Alton Abbey supposed to be a better English men's Benedictine house?

You're thinking what I'm thinking, Father. It's a waving rainbow flag of warning!
As a look at Advent's website makes clear, from the lavender colour scheme (outside of Advent or Lent) and the buzzword 'inclusive'.
They've still got the externals, more than many English churches, but another old fortress of the faith has surrendered to become dressed-up Broad Churchmanship.
If this is what's happening, then...
Sadly he wouldn't be the first ex-Anglo-Catholic to chuck the delicate balance of tolerant conservatism for the secular gay lifestyle.
From respectable ye-olde-English abbot (at least that's the image Americans have!) to Californian swinger. My head hurts just thinking about it.

The former Abbot became Rector, about a year ago, of one of those relatively few parishes in the Diocese of San Joaquin that chose to remain in ECUSA when the bishop and the great majority of parishes and clergy left in December 2007.
